Well we're back from Elk Lake with lots of memories but no moose. We didn't see any fresh sign where we were suggested to go. So Fri. before dark 3 of us went in and I did a call in the most likely looking area. No responce but the next morning on the walk in we saw 2 sets of tracks. Obviously they came in over night to the call. We set up and I started the calling from the water side, with miss molly set up at the waters edge. I just barly finished my first set of cow calls when I hear, oough, oough. My heart was immediatly in my throat. I thought man, this is gonna be over before we even get started. This was accompanied by thrashing. I could hear him getting closer and thought he was going to come up over the ridge behind me at any time. He couldn't have been more than 50 yds away.
This went on for about 10 min. If he had come from behind me I would have had a 7 yd shot or less Not sure what happened but he turned and went around the edge of the pond. I could hear him walking away with a loud snap every now and then, I could also hear his antlers flicking off branches as he walked away.
I tried everything to get him back. Getting aggresive, peeing in the water, soft moans. Nada! The other guy 60 yds to my left heard one beside him also that I had no clue was there.
Little sign and warm weather hampered us. We did manage to find better sign towards the end of the week. Even had another bull going but because of swirling winds Ray made the call to get out and go back that night.
Last day I went down a rd. that had no fresh tracks the prvious day but now had 4 sets Righ taway I heard a cow bawling her head off in the swamp out in front of me. Very very cool. How eary. Heard some crashing and thought something might be going up to guys on ridge. Looking back, it being the last day, I should have tried to do a push. Just wasn't in that frame of mind though. If it had been with the rifles it wouldn't have been a question.
Oh well. We had a blast. Lots of laughs, good eats, and a few pops. One of the most enjoyable unsuccesfull hunts I have ever been on.
Bring on the rifle season. I wonder how many are hanging by now.
