i was wondering how do you guys call your bull at our camp my dad usually lets out a long cow in heat call just before bed and that has worked for us for all the hunts we've had, but what are your techniques to bring it in?

What I do is call in the morning for an hour and a half, about every 20 min. Know if you see a bull and he doesn't want to come close or is hiding in the thick brush give a few grunts, and soon enough he will come out to see who is in his turf.

yes, I have tried the night before and it has not worked for me yet, but I will keep at it. Calling early morning and late afternoon. For those stubborn ones a big branch rattled in some brush and some grunts. 10

this is usually my hubby's department,, he does the calling, although I have tried it a few times,, it sounded like a sick, love-struck mule it really did something for my guide tho naw,, seriously tho, he does the calling, he's an expert moose hunter,, I hope he joins us here, he really knows his stuff.. he sometimes calls in the evening, and we go in the morning after,, and more often than not, we see fresh sign where they have been. I really enjoy wandering around in the bush,, as does he,, we usually set a time, or a location to where we'll meet,, and go. that's what happened last year,, I'll tell you all about it in my '05 moose story. sometimes I think I should learn how to bow hunt, it seems that's when the moose are really crazed,, and come to the slightest of grunts or calls.. maybe then I wouldn't sound so bad,, LOL well to a moose Sue

I have been considering the bow hunt for that very reason, cause there is nothing like a Bull grunting and approaching, however I would not mind knocking a few more Bulls down with the rifle before I make the transistion. 10

Every situation is diffirant. What works today might not tomorrow. Unfortunatly we don't stay in the same area we hunt. so although I like the idea of calling before you go to be and maybe in the middle of the night, its just not an option for us. A friend of mine has done this years ago, he ended up shooting a 56 incher in the first hour of the hunt.
We don't go till the third week of the season so calling is a bit tougher but it can still be done. I called one in, in November one year that came over 1000 yards away. I watched him run across a clear cut to my call. There is nothing in the world cooler than calling in a bull moose. Hearing the brake branhes, wake there rack off trees like a baseball bat, grunting. I LOVE IT. what a rush. I would love to try hunting in the peak of the rut where we go because I am told that they answer to pretty much anything that remotely sounds like a cow.
I am going bow hunting for them again myself this year. If the rut is in full swing it should be a blast.

Our calling consists of cow calls with some bull work mixed in, we hunt morning and evening and our success is so so, the first year this group went together one of the guys called in a huge bull to 60 yards (bow hunt), and could not get it any closer, a real rush. As corman pointed out every situation is different, you can call forever and hear nothing, you can close the truck door a little to hard and have one answer. All that you can do is keep trying different things and use what works for you. The "experts" say to use cow calls but I have spent some of time hunting with natives and I find that they mostly use bull calls. You decide.
We are going again this year and will try a few new things, one thing I am sure of is that as long as you keep any human sounds to a real minimum you are not likely to frighten the animal away.

It was I who called that animal in that quickshot is talking about and man what a rush. Half fear half excitment. Have played that over in my mind many times. Let me tell ya pucker factor is high.
