Hello all just dropping in to say Hi. I have hunted moose in the past but not with a harvest. Have had success in bringing them in just never let a bolt fly yet. Looking forward to this Sept. Going to Geraldton with another new member on this board. We have been before and always have a blast. Hopefully I'll learn something on the forum and will more than likely ask some silly questions.

Hey bigugly, not sure if I like the name or not but at least it made me laugh... Anyway I see you are heading to Geraldton this year for a bow hunt. The guys that I have been hunting with the last couple of years are thinking of heading that way in October for a rifle hunt. (We are not quite sure we could handle the up close and personal bow hunt just yet). So I have been trying to get some general information on the area, such as what is the moose population like, number of hunters, any issues with the natives (I understand there is 3 reserves in the area and night hunting is a bit of a problem, large enough area to accomidate another small gang or would we end up stepping on toes etc.
I know that you are heading for the bow hunt and might not be able to shed too much light on the rifle hunt but any information would really be appreciated or from anyone else as well.
Thanks in advance
Donnie

Welcome to the Board!!!
I agree, calling them into rifle range is one thing but a Bolt is even harder.
Best Regards, DB

donnie7. The hunters start pouring in around the Wed of the last archery week. Not sure how hard it is hunted but there are lots of moose in the area. If you get of the roads a ways you'll get away from the majority of natives. Lots of water in the area but no big rivers. We see moose every year we go and have called a few in just not close enough for sticks. Every year someone in the lodge has harvested an animal just not our gang. This is our year though so you'll have one less bull to chase. ;D Oh yeah the name is not against the moose it's my nickname

Bigugly,
I hope your right in that there is one less bull when I arrive... That would not bother me at all... Any suggestions on roads or places to start?
What is the Archery traffic like during the second week of the stick season?
Thanks again
Donnie

donnie7, there are always other gangs at camp, WildGoose Lake Lodge, and we do run into them from time to time. For the most part though everyone knows where evreyone else is huunting. We usally hunt the Wildgoose lake road but there is another one closer to Gelico just can't remember the name. Most of the moose we see shot are taken down the other road but it's almost to the point of quad only and we only have one quad for 4 guys.

Bigugly,
I think I have looked at there website, they offer pretty good packages including tags if need be? I seem to remember you could get two adult tags for 6-8 people or something like that!
The other road is it west or east of Jelico and does the road turn north or south? How long is the road if you have any idea, we have the ability to take at least 4-5 four wheelers, all are 4 wheel drive but one and it is fast enough (with a crazy enough driver) to get through a lot of stuff. If it is quad road only is there clear cuts down in there and still a lot of water? Is there anywhere to put up large tent as this is what we will be hunting out of this year?
Thanks again all this information is greatly appreciated.

Hey Donnie7 I hunt with Bigugly, the other road is east of Jelico but west of the camp. It runs to the north so you are hunting in WMU 19 but you can hunt 21 as the camp boarders both areas, hwy 11 is the split. We will try the other road this year as far as we can go anyway. Wild goose lake road goes a long way north and gets into 4 wheeler only country as well. You will hunt a combination of areas like water, old cuts and thick black spruce swamps it is a very diverse area and rich with wildlife. I will dig out my topo map and give you the number if you are interested.

Hi missmod88 thanks for the response. I would love to geet my wifr hunting. She loves all the game meat I bring home just thinks she would have problems doing the harvesting herself. Really hoping to one day take a moose. May have to break down and go with a rifle some day till then I'll have to reley on the bow. Every year the gang goes up together we learn more. This year we're commited to doing more scouting. We have a few areas we have always seen moose but never connected. We have seen all these in the clearcuts. This year we plan on bushwacking into some hard to get to swamps. Maybe it'll be our year. Don't worry about my nick name I've been called big guy or ugly for years just made it easier on everybody this way. They're all just jealous anyway cause I'm so d**n good looking. ;D
