Today a good friend of mine and I got out nice and early, decided to go where I shot my first Tom, I knew there were more. The morning started out with deer sighting and then hens cherping, two hens came around from behind us and went to the dekes and were purring and yelping pretty cool start, but discouraging, because I had seen two hens yesterday but they had 5 Toms in tow, where are they?
Not long after the hens made there way to the bush beside us and Brian says to me, is that turkeys over there, I said oh yeah, and we started to yelp and cluck these two birds gobbled and then went in two a run towrd us, they had 400 yards to make up, at about 200 yards they slowed right down and started struting, we had this all planned the bird on the right was his and the bird on the left was mine, you could tell the bird on his side dominant, he kept cutting in front of him and trying to push him away, finally they got in range but we let them keep coming, they joined forces and went over and in full strut they stood beside the jake decoy as if to tell him to beat it, they had changed sides now the dominant bird was on my side, I said are you ready and he said No I can't see my birds head, it is directly behind the jake decoys head, all the way in I had been giving them little cluck and yelps to keep them interested, at one point I thought they were going to hang up, Bri said give em a little cluck, I did, they advanced, now we just had to wait for the one to move over and he did, I said I will get them to lift there heads, I cut on the mouth call and there heads came up just enough and Bri said 1-2-3 and BOOM, two birds were flopping on the ground, it was picture perfect, there they lay a huge celebration insued, both our first doubles and we had been out a few times together. An absolutely great day!
