How did everyone make out deer hunting? We had a crap year. In 2 weeks of hunting I saw 2 deer, a doe and a fawn and managed to bag em both. Dad saw nothing, Marshal saw nada and Roger saw 1 8ptr that he got. What a crappy year. I think due to the lack of water they are deep in the swamps they normaly can't get in to. My swamp is full of oaks. They would much rather stay in there and feed on them then come out to feed on what little they can find elsewhere.
We tried canning one of the deer we got this year. I am gonna try some out tonight.

We had kind of crappy year as well, we weren't seeing any deer until after 5 when it was getting to dark (on our way out). I managed to get a decent doe on the Middle Sunday. We butchered the entire thing for canning. I haven't got it back yet as one of my Dad's friends is doing it for us. Had our last jar from last year about a month ago, very good. I am hopeing to get one during the blackpowder season in a couple of weeks that will go towards sausage and pepperettes.
I must admit I have never really heard of a swamp full of oaks, please explain this a little more.

There is a river that runs at the back of my property. From the edge of the ridge out to the edge of this river is is very thick with mixed hardwoods. Maple, oaks, beach and iron wood (not sure of the proper name.) The past few years this has been flooded up with water. This year it was dry but too thick to walk through and see anything. We call it the swamp because more often than not in the fall it is full of water. The ducks are in there like crazy when its wet, but like I said, too thick to really do anything about. The rd is actually called the long swamp rd. So thats why we call it the swamp.

Ahhh, now that makes more sense then what I was first envisioning! I was always under the impression that it is called Iron wood, toughest GD thing I have ever cut, but it burns very well.

I think black ash has a smoother bark than iron wood?
