ya last year my buddy shot a calf and the cow stayed and just snorted and made noises for about an hour. She only took off when another member of our gang shot a bull not to far from where she was. She didn't stay around long after that.

the first moose I ever shot was back in 2001(ish) and it was a calf,, we were looking at this black spot,, and it wasn't moving,, not an ear, not a wink,, nothing,, until the pair of them (cow and calf) stood up, and took off fast! I shot the calf running at about 150 yards, and it went down,, my hubby (giverguns from the board) was with me, and we gutted it, and we could hear the cow in the bush, never saw her, but sure heard her snorting and stomping around,, I kept thinking she was going to charge us,, but she ended up leaving us.. I felt awful that day Sue

I have only shot two calfs, the first was with the cow and we had a cow tag. This a while back and my third year of moose hunting. The cow and calf came to me at about 60 yards, everyone had always told me to shoot the calf and the cow will hang around, but to me the big had more meat so that was the one I wanted. She went down at the shot and the calf just froze. So I had my first and second moose on the same day. A few years later with no adult tags, at last light I seen a cow and calf in a big meadow, I shot the calf and the cow took off and never looked back, she covered about 100 yards before vanishing into the bush, may have hung around but we seen no sign of her and she was flying when she hit the bush.
